Symptoms & Causes

Cluster headaches are characterized by severe, intense pain that usually occurs on one side of the head, often around the eye. The overview of cluster headaches reveals that these headaches occur in patterns or clusters, with periods of frequent attacks (clusters) followed by periods of remission. The pain is often described as a sharp, burning, or piercing sensation and can last from 15 minutes to several hours.

Symptoms of a cluster headache go beyond the pain itself. During an attack, individuals may experience red or teary eyes, nasal congestion, drooping eyelids, and facial sweating on the affected side. The pain is so intense that many individuals find it challenging to stay still and may pace or rock back and forth during an attack.

The causes of cluster headaches are not fully understood, but certain factors may trigger or contribute to their occurrence. These triggers can include alcohol consumption, certain foods, changes in sleep patterns, and exposure to cigarette smoke. Genetics may also play a role, as individuals with a family history of cluster headaches may be more susceptible to experiencing them.

Diagnosis & Treatments

Diagnosing cluster headaches involves a meticulous examination of symptoms, medical history, and a physical assessment. Our healthcare professionals will explore the location and nature of your headaches, inquire about the frequency and duration of attacks, and may order imaging studies, such as an MRI, to rule out other potential causes.

Once diagnosed, the treatment approach for cluster headaches is aimed at managing symptoms, reducing the frequency and intensity of attacks, and improving overall quality of life. Medications are commonly prescribed to alleviate pain during an attack and to prevent or reduce the frequency of cluster periods. Acute treatments may include the use of oxygen therapy or specific medications, such as triptans or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) inhibitors.

In addition to acute treatments, preventive medications may be prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of cluster periods. These may include calcium channel blockers, corticosteroids, or antiseizure medications. Our healthcare professionals will work closely with you to determine the most appropriate medications based on your individual symptoms and medical history.

Preparing for your appointment at our Pain Clinic involves open communication with our healthcare team. Discussing your medical history, providing detailed information about your symptoms, and expressing any concerns you may have are vital steps in the diagnostic and treatment process. Our team will guide you through a thorough examination and discuss the most appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

In cases where medications do not provide sufficient relief or if an individual is experiencing chronic cluster headaches, surgical options may be considered. Procedures such as occipital nerve stimulation or deep brain stimulation may be recommended in select cases.

Rehabilitation is a crucial aspect of managing cluster headaches, focusing on providing support and resources to help individuals cope with the impact of these intense headaches on their daily lives. Our healthcare professionals may recommend stress management techniques, lifestyle modifications, and psychological support to enhance overall well-being.
